Insulation Contractors in Ottawa

Most people searching this are not shopping for a product. They are trying to work out who to trust. This page is written for that, not as a brochure.

What a Proper Quote Should Contain

The single biggest difference between insulation contractors is not price. It is whether the quote tells you what you are actually buying. A figure on its own is not a quote, and it is impossible to compare two of them.

A written scope should name four things: the material, the installed depth, the exact areas included, and any preparation or air sealing the result depends on. If a quote says "insulate attic" and gives a number, you cannot tell whether you are getting the depth you need, whether the old material is coming out, or whether the air leakage is being dealt with at all.

Ask for those four things in writing from everyone you speak to. It makes quotes comparable, and it tells you a great deal about who you are dealing with.

Questions Worth Asking Anyone

Will you go into the attic and the basement, or just quote the room I called about? Insulation works as a whole envelope. A contractor who quotes only the room you mentioned has not diagnosed anything.

Is the air sealing included, or separate? Insulation slows heat through a material; it does nothing about air going around it. On most older Ottawa houses the sealing matters more than the extra inches, and it should be a visible line rather than an assumption.

Who actually does the work? Ask whether the people quoting are the people installing, or whether the job is passed on.

What happens if the depth is short? A stated installed depth is checkable after the fact. Ask what happens if it is not met.

How We Work

We do not price insulation over the phone, and we will not pretend to. What a building needs depends on how it was built, what is already in it and where the air is actually moving, none of which is visible from an address. So we come out, look at the whole envelope, and give you a written scope. That scope governs the job.

Our own installers do the work with professional rigs and full protective equipment. The estimate is free and there is no obligation, and travel inside our service area is not a line item.

When the Honest Answer Is "Not Yet"

Sometimes the right advice is that insulation is not your problem. A bath fan venting into the attic, a roof leak, grading that drives water at the foundation, or a heating system that is simply undersized will all produce symptoms that look like an insulation failure.

Insulating over any of those spends money without fixing the cause. We would rather tell you that on the visit than take the job, and it costs you nothing to find out which situation you are in.

How it runs

From first call to finished work

  1. Describe the problem

Tell us what the building is doing — a cold room, a draught, a heating bill, condensation. The symptom tells us where to look first.

  2. We assess the envelope

We look at the building, not just the room you called about, because the symptom and the cause are frequently in different places.

  3. Written scope, then a decision

Material, installed depth, areas included, and any sealing the result depends on. You decide with that in front of you, not a verbal number.

  4. Our crew installs it

Our own installers, professional equipment, and the scope governs what gets done. The installed depth is checkable after we leave.

Hiring questions

What Ottawa homeowners ask us

How do I compare two insulation quotes?

Make both of them name the material, the installed depth, the exact areas included and whether air sealing is in or out. Two numbers alone are not comparable, and the quote that omits those four things is usually the one hiding something.

Should I get three quotes?

Get as many as you want, but compare scopes rather than totals. A cheaper quote that skips the air sealing or installs less depth is not cheaper, it is a different job.

Do you charge for the assessment?

No. The visit and the written estimate are free, with no obligation, and travel inside our service area is not a line item on the quote.

Can you tell me a price over the phone?

Not honestly. The same symptom can have several causes with very different costs. Anyone giving you a firm number without seeing the building is guessing, and you will find out which way they guessed later.

Do you do the work yourselves?

Yes. Our own installers carry out the job with professional rigs and full protective equipment.

What if I only want one room done?

That is fine, and we will quote it. We will still look at the whole envelope first, because that is how we find out whether the room is the cause or just where you notice it.

Want a written scope you can actually compare?

Tell us what the building is doing and we will come out, assess it and put the options in writing.
